PhD

The Ph.D. Program in Clinical Sciences is a doctoral pathway based at the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine. It is promoted by a broad and diverse scientific community of professors and researchers from the University of Florence, as well as from other highly qualified, internationally active research or academic institutions.
The Ph.D. program offers doctoral training tracks in basic and translational research and is structured into six different curricula:
  • Clinical Pathophysiology and Aging, Emergency Medicine, and Nursing Sciences
  • Clinical and Experimental Medicine and Radiology
  • Pathology and Clinics of the Musculoskeletal System and Calcified Tissues
  • Surgical Sciences
  • Psychology, Occupational Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Pain Therapy
  • Infectious Diseases and International Cooperation, Global Health
The program's core research themes range from immunology, inflammation, coagulation, and rheumatology to infectious diseases, advanced imaging techniques, emergency and urgency medicine, intensive care, surgical and orthopedic sciences, clinical psychology, nursing and rehabilitation sciences, and occupational medicine.
How to Apply
To enroll in the Ph.D. program, candidates must participate in a competitive selection process based on qualifications and exams. They must submit an application and a research proposal according to the procedures specified on the Ph.D. Programs section of the UNIFI website.
Entry Requirements
Admission to the Ph.D. program requires a Master's Degree under the current regulations, or an equivalent qualification under previous regulations or obtained abroad. Holding a degree in a scientific field is a preferential qualification.
Ph.D. Student Activities and Responsibilities
The program and its scholarships last three years. At the beginning of the program, Ph.D. students are assigned one or more supervisors (tutors) who guide their academic development and scientific research activities within the framework of their doctoral project.
The training program includes:
  • Research activities within one of the department's research groups;
  • Disciplinary and interdisciplinary training through educational activities specifically designed for the Ph.D. program;
  • Training and research periods abroad at qualified research centers.
  • Ph.D. students may also carry out teaching assistance, scientific dissemination, and student orientation activities.
Award of the Ph.D. Degree
To earn the degree at the end of the three-year period, Ph.D. students must submit a written thesis evaluated by two external reviewers. Subsequently, the thesis is defended before a dedicated Examination Committee composed of experts in the candidate's specific field of research.
Periods Abroad During the Program
A minimum stay of 3 months abroad is required.
