The Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine (DMSC) at the University of Florence is one of the largest departments at the university and serves as the central hub for research, education, and clinical activities in the biomedical field. Its identity is based on the integration of basic sciences and clinical medicine, interdisciplinarity, and close collaboration with leading healthcare institutions, foremost among them the Careggi University Hospital.
The Department offers a broad and comprehensive range of programs covering the entire academic curriculum: from three-year bachelor’s and single-cycle master’s degree programs—including the Medicine and Surgery program—to residency programs, doctoral programs, first- and second-level master’s programs, and advanced training courses. Particular attention is given to postgraduate training in innovative fields with high clinical and social impact, such as emergency medicine, rare diseases, thrombosis and hemostasis, and myeloproliferative disorders. The Department also promotes international mobility for students and faculty through Erasmus+ programs and agreements with foreign universities and research centers.

Research is at the heart of the DMSC’s mission. The Department, recognized as a Department of Excellence for the 2018–2022 period, conducts basic, translational, and clinical research across a wide range of fields: from oncology to hematology, from cardiology to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, and from molecular pathology to gender-specific medicine. Its laboratories, centers, and research units participate in projects funded by European grants, the Ministry of University and Research, the Ministry of Health, and national and international scientific foundations. This activity results in high-level scientific output, with publications in leading international journals

The DMSC is actively engaged in transferring knowledge to society through a variety of channels. In the area of technological innovation, it manages patents and licenses and develops spin-offs and joint laboratories with public and private entities. In the area of outreach and public engagement, it promotes cultural initiatives aimed at the community, participates in science outreach programs in elementary and secondary schools, and hosts the Museum of Anatomy, a testament to the link between the history of medicine and its contemporary evolution. The Department also contributes to the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, with a particular focus on health, well-being, and quality education.
