Mission

The DMSC’s mission is to make a significant contribution to the advancement of scientific knowledge and its application in preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative contexts, thanks to its extensive network of collaborations with leading national and international clinical institutions—such as the Careggi University Hospital, the Meyer University Hospital, the Azienda Sanitaria Toscana Centro, and the Don Carlo Gnocchi Onlus I.R.C.C.S. Foundation—which ensures access to high-value clinical cases and an ideal environment for the development of advanced experimental and clinical research.

The institutional missions of the DMSC are:
In the field of education: the DMSC serves as a central hub for most of the bachelor’s, master’s, and single-cycle master’s degree programs in the Biomedical Sciences Division at the University of Florence. These programs ensure high-quality education, including through a comprehensive postgraduate offering comprising Specialization Schools, Master’s programs, Doctoral programs, and Advanced Training Courses, with a growing focus on innovative teaching methodologies.
In close collaboration with the School of Human Health Sciences, the DMSC is committed to promoting simulation-based training and establishing a dedicated center to ensure increasingly effective integration of teaching in the biomedical field (Interdepartmental Center for the Development of New Minimally Invasive Technologies in Oncological Surgery - C.O.M.I.S; Innovation in Teaching and Continuing Education in Medicine - I.D.E.CO.M.)
In the field of research: the DMSC promotes cutting-edge scientific activities with a strong translational and interdisciplinary focus. In recent years, it has acquired advanced technological platforms and strengthened its expertise in bioinformatics and big data analysis (Laboratory of Computational Biomedicine – COMBINE).
These infrastructures, together with the consolidation of omics and computational expertise, enable the center to effectively address the challenges of precision medicine, improving scientific performance and its ability to attract competitive funding.
In the field of Knowledge Dissemination, the DMSC is constantly expanding its initiatives in technology transfer, scientific outreach, and engagement with society through educational and project-based activities that also involve the I.D.E.CO.M. Research Unit, which is dedicated to developing innovative educational methodologies for undergraduate programs and graduate-level training.
